Upcoming Events:

Wake Forest Meet in the Street: Saturday, May 3, 2008

Meet In The Street celebrates its 28th year in Historic Downtown Wake Forest, North Carolina.  An annual festival that features arts and crafts vendors from throughout the state of NC and beyond, Meet in the Street is a fantastic event for the entire family.  Over 10,000 people are expected to attend - we hope you can join us too!

Wakeminster will host a booth and hand out candy, balloons, etc to attendees and just basically get the word out about or church. We need volunteers for 2-hour shifts between 9am and 5pm the day of the event. Please contact Tony Hayden if you are interested in helping.

Belize Mission Trip:  Friday, July 25 thru Friday, August 1, 2008

Belize is located on the southern border of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, on the east coast of the continent. Belize is the only nation in Central America with English as it's official language. However only 5 percent of the population lists English as their primary language. Formerly a British colony, Belize gained its independence in 1981. It's population of 300,000 people come from varied ethnic backgrounds.

The cost for the trip will be approximately $1700.00 per person.

If you are interested in going on this trip, please let Tony know as soon as possible. Look out for an informational meeting in January, 2008. Next info meeting is Sunday, January 27 at 12:15 pm in the Fellowship Hall.

Registration:

If you are going to attend, I need the registration form from the back of the info packet back to me by Sunday, Feb. 3rd.  You can also download a Word version of the registration form to fill in or download the PDF version to print out and fill in.

Cost of the trip:
The cost of the trip will be approx. $1700 per person which will cover lodging, most meals, airfare, ground transport, etc. I will not know the exact cost until I book the flight. I’m pretty sure it will not be more than $1700, though.

Payment Schedule:

February 3rd, 2008    $250.00 with registration forms

March 23rd, 2008      $250.00

June 22nd, 2008     remaining balance

Passport:

You MUST have a Passport to go on this trip. The State Department web site says processing time is currently 4-6 weeks. Please start the process ASAP to make sure there are no last-minute issues. The cost for a Passport is $97 according to the State Department web site.

Details on how to apply: http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/first/first_830.html
Local processing facility:
http://iafdb.travel.state.gov/
Online Passport application:
https://pptform.state.gov/FraudAbuseNotice.aspx?form=DS11

Make two copies of your Passport. Keep one with you but separate from your Passport. (Once in Belize I will try to secure our Passports in a hotel safe or something). Leave the other copy at home with a parent/relative.

Passport photos can be taken at Walgreen's stores and probably any of the other drug chains that have photo centers.

PARENTS: It may be a good idea for at least one parent to have their own Passport. This would be useful in the unlikely event you would have to travel to Belize due to an emergency.

Immunizations:

Every person planning to go to Belize MUST obtain the proper immunizations. This is not a 'legal' requirement but it is a 'Tony' requirement.

The biggest concern in Central America would be Malaria. Luckily, Malaria is very easy to avoid. There is an oral vaccine to be taken weekly starting before, and ending after, the trip.

Other concerns would be Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B (which many of you are probably already immunized against), Tetanus and Typhoid. All of these are easily avoidable with the proper preparation.

Check the CDC website for Belize-specific information.

Basically what you need to do is visit a travel clinic 4-6 weeks before we leave for Belize. The appointment takes about an hour.

Duke Travel Clinic

Anyone under 16 years old will need to be seen at the Pediatric Infectious Disease Clinic at the Children's Health Center on Erwin Road in Durham. Call 919-668-4000 for an appointment.

For those over 16, you can call 919-416-3853 and ask to make appointment with the Duke Travel Clinic. Right now they are in the Southpoint area of Durham.

If you want to check with your primary care physician, they may be able to refer you to a closer clinic.

Just FYI, the approximate pricing for these immunizations at Duke are as follows:

Office visit        $82.00

Hep A vaccine  $101.00 (booster needed in 6 months)

Typhoid            $52.00

Malaria             $15.00

Tetanus                  ?

Not getting sick      priceless

Duke will also provide you/us with an immunization card to have in case of medical emergency.

I doubt that insurance will cover most of this so plan ahead. Check with your insurer, though.

Medical:

You know the drill; If you are under 18, I need your parents to fill out this medical release form and return it to me.

Remember that some medications prescribed in the U.S. may be illegal in other countries. If you are taking any prescription medications that you will need to take with you, please follow these guidelines:

  • Check the State Department Consular Information Sheet for Belize to see if your drug is illegal (I found none listed).
  • Just in case, get a note from your doctor on his/her letterhead indicating that he/she prescribed that medication for you. Make sure they include their DEA number.
  • Put the medication in your CARRY-ON luggage. Do not put it in a checked bag.
  • Keep the drug in it's original container with your name, etc, on it.
  • If the drug is liquid, remember to follow the new, ever-so-effective security guidelines for carry-ons or your medication will be destroyed.
